Single Stream Recycling Makes Recycling Easier

Remember when you had several recycling bins and you had to sort recyclable items before you put the bins on the curb for pick-up? With what was called dual-stream or multi-stream recycling, you did the sorting. But today, we have single-stream recycling. That means you get to put all recyclable items in one, curbside cart. The industry calls it “comingling.” And after the cart is picked up and emptied at the Materials Recovery Center, we do the sorting for you. Over the last several years, single-stream recycling has increased recycling participation by residential consumers. But it has also increased cart contamination because some folks use the cart for non-recyclable trash, or other items that can’t be recycled. So, to make it all work for all of us, be sure you know the do’s and don’ts of what goes in your cart and what should be left out. And when in doubt, leave it out.
