Old TV Recycling Event Collects 13 Tons

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (March 12, 2020) – The Regional Recycling District in Pulaski County and Recycle Saline (the Saline County Solid Waste Management District) collected 13 tons of old TVs, flat screens and computer monitors at their jointly operated event held in Little Rock and Benton on Saturday, February 22.

Everything from heavy console TVs and TVs with obsolete cathode ray tubes (CRTs), to projection TVs, first-generation flat screens, and worn-out computer monitors and tablets were dropped off by residents of Pulaski and Saline Counties at eSCO Recycling in Little Rock (spelled eSCO), and at the Saline County Fairgrounds in Benton.

“For the second year in a row, two solid waste management districts conducted a joint collection of electronic waste,” said Craig Douglass, executive director of the Regional Recycling & Waste Reduction District in Pulaski County. “The coordination between two regional solid waste management districts can serve as a model for other districts to consolidate efforts to better serve the public.”

“Electronic equipment that is no longer functional or simply out of date, like old TVs and computer monitors, represent 2 percent of the trash dumped every year in Americaʼs landfills. However, this equipment we call e-waste, also represents 70 percent of the toxic waste ending up in landfills,” said Tiffany Dunn, executive director of the Saline County Solid Waste Management District.

Solid waste management districts statewide are tasked with operating programs that keep electronic waste, such as old TVs, monitors, printers, copiers, cell phones, and fax machines out of landfills.
